What is BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)?
Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns to perform basic, life-sustaining functions like breathing, circulation, and cell production while you are at rest. Essentially, it is the energy you would expend if you stayed in bed all day.
The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation
This calculator uses the highly accurate Mifflin-St Jeor formula to estimate your caloric needs:
- For Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) + 5
- For Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) - 161
What is TDEE?
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is an estimation of how many calories you burn per day when exercise is taken into account. It is calculated by multiplying your BMR by an activity factor. Knowing your TDEE is essential for weight management; to lose weight, you must consume fewer calories than your TDEE.
